Van Bumped Off Ferry After Collision—Children Rescued From Sinking Minivan

January 13, 2012 - According to reports a minivan was bumped off of a ferry after an accident.

According to Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz, witnesses at the scene stated that the minivan of a family visiting from Taiwan was knocked off the Balboa Island Ferry when a black Mercedes stuck the minivan pushing it through the metal safety arm and into the water.

The Mercedes was teetering on the front of the ferry after hitting the minivan. The driver told investigators that the accelerator stuck, according to Schulz.
The family of four escaped minutes before the van nosed down and sake, after floating for a few minutes, according to witnesses.

One of the ferry workers jumped into the water and two boaters pulled alongside of the minivan before it sunk to aid the family. The father asked for help in getting his little girl out, according to small dinghy boater Skip Staats. Staats was able to reach in the rear window of the van and unbuckle seatbelt of the girls car seat.
The other child a young boy climbed over the seat and climbed in the dinghy, Staats said.

Boater James Donoghue assisted the mother in getting out of the minivan approximately 20 seconds before it sank. He said he asked the mother if she was alright and after saying yes, she said “but the minivan was a rental.”

Staats said the father asked if he did something wrong and that it was their first time in Newport Beach. According to police no one was injured in the accident and the van was found in approximately 15 feet of water, upside down. Divers and a floating crane to extract the minivan, while investigators were on the scene.
According to police the family were vacationing in Orange County and then San Diego and were on their way to take their children ages 4 and 6 whale watching.
